WAA Update

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

You may have noticed from my tracker in the upper right hand corner that I have in fact passed the 300 mile mark in my quest to reach  my goal of 410 miles by foot by May 17th.  I am very pleased with that.  Now the next several weeks are going to be a challenge to squeeze out the last 110 miles.  I have a few things on my side though.

For starters the weather is getting to be nice and warm, so walks with Tillie are extremely enjoyable.  That is 2.20 miles per day at least.  I have two races coming up, which are great for earning mileage.  I also have a trip to Disney.  I plan to wear my pedomiter to the parks so that I can count that mileage towards my goal.  The last Friday of the challenge is the Relay for Life.  Which means lots and lots of walking.  Plan to wear my pedometer there as well so that I can count the mileage.

As long as my body holds up I should be able to blow that 410 mile goal out of the water!

The Further Adventures of K80K Dealing with Aggressive Insects

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

The insect of choice today was a wasp.  It decided to build a home in my shed the day I needed to cut the grass.  As soon as I opened the shed lid I saw two of them staring back at me from the beginnings of a nest.  I ran right back into the house and searched for spray, but couldn’t find any.  Called my parents and they didn’t have any either.  I decide to risk in and go back outside to get to work.  I pulled the equipment from the shed and made my way to the front yard.   Took my time and made everything look pretty.  Then came time for the backyard.  I did the outside of the yard without trouble, but when I got inside the yard one of the wasps left the shed and started dive bombing me.  I ran inside and called Dad for help.  While I waited for him to arrive I managed to get one of them with my indoor bug spray.  It left me alone long enough for me to finish the back yard.  When Dad walked in the front door I noticed him carrying a bottle of wasp and hornet spray.  Yay!  He was able to spray down the nest and save the day.  I was able to finish up putting everything back in the shed with no more problems.

I hope to do a FIRm workout the evening.  However I am workoing from home today so that I can save on vacation hours that I need to use this pay period.

The Further Adventures of K80K Preparing for a Run

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

This morning made for more fun during my pre-run ritual.  This time it happend a little earlier than last.  I am not much of a girlie-girl but this one pushed me over the edge.

I finished my banana and french toast and then headed up to get changed.  I pulled off my night shirt and was greated by a tick on my boob!  I started screaming “get it off, get it off”, jumping up and down and swiping at my boob.  It took several smacks but it released its grip and fell to the floor.  It laid there I am sure staring up at me with its little tick eyes as I felt somewhat embarrassed by my own reaction.  I went and grabbed a wad of toilet paper and picked him and carried him to the bathroom.  Said a little prayer and ignited him with my candle lighter.  I ignited the toilet paper as well so I had to splash it with water to put it out.  I tossed him in the toilet and sent him to a watery grave.

The rest of my run went swimingly.  My goal was to go for 7-8 and I reached 8 miles without too much of a struggle.  The weather was gorgeous.  Now I have a really good calorie burn to take to dinner with me tonight as we celebrate my father and my uncle’s birthdays.  🙂

Cheering squad…

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

I push open the sliding glass door, hit the power button my Garmin and make my way out onto the back porch.  After my 8 minute warm-up walk on the treadmill I start stretching out my muscles to prepare them for the 5 mile run I have planned for the evening.  The weather is warm and sun strong.  I close my eyes and take a deep breath enjoying the spring air and I hear a bunch of cheerleaders chanting, “Go, Go Katie Go Go Go Katie”.  I snap back to reality.

You may have heard the Dunkin Donuts commercial where the woman is in a meeting at work and takes a sip of her Dunkin Donuts coffee and hears a cheerleading squad chanting her name, which just happens to be Katie.  With the beautiful spring weather the neighbor’s had their windows open and and their radio blaring while I went out to stretch.  I didn’t even notice it until I heard someone chanting my name.   I have to say it made me smile and put a little extra bounce in my step.  Throughtout my run when I hit a tough spot I could hear the cheerleading squad in my head cheering me on.  In any other situation I would find that commercial annoying, but it came at just the right time for me.  I might just need to buy the Nike Plus and make those cheerleaders chanting my “power song”, lol.

Welcome Spring…

…oh how I’ve missed you.  Please stay around while…please.  Please!

It seems the weather has been one big, excuse my language, cock tease.  Nice for two days, not so nice for two days.  Back and forth.  It makes it so difficult to get myself up in the morning and out the door, so I have been running at night.  I will be doing the same tonight since it was in the 30s this morning when I got up and it will be in the low 70s when I get home from work tonight.  I just get up at the same time and go to work early so that it is still light out when I get home and run in the evenings.  I found out that my perfect pre-end-of-day-run snack is sliced turkey on 100% whole wheat bread.  Who’da thunk it?

Work has continued to be swamped, hence my lack of bloggage.  I miss it.  I miss getting me thoughts out of my head and onto screen where I can hit the Publish button and send them away.  It takes pressure off of me to do so.

We are two weeks from Minnie now, so I am trying to buckle down and squeeze out the final two weeks of training without missing any days.  I have been really bad about getting my days in.  This is the least prepared I have ever felt for a race…including the Full Marathon and I never reached my training goals in that one either.  How scarey is that?  Last time I ran Minnie I only trained 7 miles and felt great for the race.   I finally hit the 7 mile target on Tuesday, but hope to go one better and do 8 for my long runs this weekend and next.  Keep your fingers crossed for me.  I might need the extra luck.  :/
