The Sky is Falling

Today we had some training in one of the rooms in the basement of our building.  About 5 minutes in we heard what we thought was a rat running through some duct work above our heads.  It stopped just above me and almost sounded like it was repeatedly running into the wall of the duct work.  We all kind of sat there staring at the ceiling as the sound got louder and the contact more and more violent.  Finally the panels in the ceiling actually raised up.  We all jumped up and moved the the perimeter of the room at this point.  The ceiling tiles almost seemed to pulsate and finally the started falling from to the ground followed by the light fixture that I was sitting directly underneath.  Needless to say my heart was racing.  Turns out it was a constractor doing work in the building that was yanking a piece of fiber optic cable from several floors above us.  It got caught in the light fixture above us and and instead of investigating what it was caught on they decided to just keep yanking until the wire was freed.  Of course to do that it had to take the ceiling of the room we were in with it.   Needless to say our building operations manager was none too happy!

Vocabulary Issues

One day last week we decided we needed to restore one of our databases.  Turns out the SCSI card on the UNIX box went bad, so our DBAs had to jump through some hoops to get the database back to where we needed it to be.  For those not tech savy the DBAs worked some magic.  When the database was back I sent an e-mail to the group stating that “After a herculean effort on behalf of the DBAs…” we had our database back.

A member of our group ran with it and took the body of Hercules from the Disney cartoon and photoshopped the heads of the DBAs on it.  I went ahead and printed them out and made them into paper dolls that I then handed out to various members of our group.

Yesterday the DBAs ran into a Java problem.  It was my turn to help them, which doesn’t happen too often.  After solving the problem I returned to my desk.  One of the DBAs walked up to my cube and says to me “Thank you for your hermaphroditian effort.”  He repeated it one more time before the other DBA hopped him and asked him if he knew what he was saying.  He was trying to say “Aphroditian”.  I was laughing so hard I had tears just running down my face.  I really haven’t laughed that hard in years.

Transitioning Back

Monday, January 21st, 2008

Today it was “Back to life, Back to reality”.  I have had that song stuck in my head since yesterday.  Blech!  Oh well.  It was a rocky transition back for me this morning.  Left my keys in my mother’s car, which Dad was driving around this morning to some doctor’s appointments.  Luck on my side, but not my fathers, had him being to large for the one MRI machine so he had to come down to one right down the street from my house.  He dropped the keys off and I was on my way to the office.

I walked in to find a finish line stretched across the opening to my cube and a card signed by all of my co-workers congratulating me.  I was a nice surprise.  I got to share some of my war stories, like the huge blisters that are gone but still have my feet feeling raw and the toenail that is progressively turning black.

I still haven’t returned to running post-marathon.  I need to get back on track though because on the 26th I start working towards my 410 miles in 16 weeks.  😀

WW Take 2…er….Whatever!

So I signed back up for Weight Watchers at Work.  I need someone to keep me accountable for what I am eating and there is something about weighing in in front of another person that just makes me want to be good.  I have been on plan for 2 days now and feel good about it.  Next week might be a little tricky with the trip to Anaheim, but I am hoping my parents will help keep me honest.  Plus I will be running my half marathon down there and walking like crazy, so hopefully that will make up for any indescretions I might have.

My ankle is feeling a little off this week again.  I am hoping, after the half to give it a full weeks rest before I start back at my full marathon training and then I will be taking it easy for a least another week as my body recovers.  I got my bib number in the mail this week.  I will be # 2722.  I was #27333 for the WDW Half in January, so I am thinking that my # for the full might be #271?  🙂

Work, work, work…

Feels like all I have been doing lately is working on stuff. Working on work stuff, working on home stuff, working…well I’ve just been busy. Tonight will be another busy night for me since I haven’t really been home for the last few weeks and all the work I have to do at home has just been piling up.

One of the things that has been keeping me from the house is Volleyball. For the past two weeks I have been playing Sunday, Monday and Wednesday. It is taking up way too much of my time. I was asked to sub for my work team again this Sunday, but we are doing something at my parent’s house on Sunday for my brother’s birthday, so I had a good excuse to turn them down. I fear that next season I will have to go part-time on one of my other two teams. I am really enjoying Mondays and I get a lot of play time on the court which has been decreasing on the my Wednesday team. I love the Wednesday team, but I think playing on Mondays is better for my ability overall. I am going to offer to go part-time for them. That is I will stay on the roster to sub when they need me, but I will not play if they have enough people to field a team. This should also save me some money on gas. Bonus!
