“Sometimes there is justice.”

I stole the title from my Dad.  That was his response when I told him this story:
When I was driving to work this morning I was behind an older gentleman on “LOCAL STREET WITH LOTS OF ACCIDENTS”(don’t need any stalkers) that was going a tiny bit below the speed limit.  I wasn’t going to go around him because we didn’t have far to go.  Well a woman pulls up behind me, gets all irritated, and whips around me to start speeding up to get around us.  At this point we are at about the 2nd driveway at the warehouses.  Out comes the cop car, light flashing and pulls behind.  She just keeps right on driving.  She got stuck at the light in the turn lane.  The cop pulls up behind her, gets out and walks up to her window and I could see him say “Yeah You!”  Cracked me up.

Down Speed, Down!

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

This morning I completed my first official speed training workout.  I read an article in Runner’s World that gave the basic reason why you should speed train and a selection of workouts to use (thank you Tawanda for finding the link for me).  In the past I have tried speed training but haven’t been very good at it.  I would always give up after an interval or two and turn my run into a tempo run.  This time I was determined to pull it off.

Last night I programmed the runs outlined in the article into my GPS and then this morning I picked the one I thought would be most entertaining.  It was workout 5 for those of you following along.  This one had me sprinting 200 meters then doing a 200 meter recovery jog.  It was actually a lot more fun than I thought it would be.  I went ahead and ran my usual route, so some of the sprints were on hills.  I am feeling it now and think I might actually be sore tomorrow.  Hopefully not too sore.

Several ladies on the FIRM boards have started recieving their new workouts.  I really hope mine are there when I get home so that I can do Annie’s new workout tomorrow.  Fingers crossed!

As promised: Survivor Harbor 7 Recap

Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

The Survivor Harbor 7 last year was a great experience.  The scenery of this run, for those that live in Baltimore, is beautiful.  You start out in Tide Point and make your way into and around Ft. McHenry.  The path that goes around the Fort is right on the water of the Chesapeake and has a beautiful breeze.  From there you run past Federal Hill and the Visionary Arts museum to make your way to the Inner Harbor.  After a slightly treacherous dash over some cobblestone you find yourself on the the promenade of the Inner Harbor.  This is one of the places for a great photo-op.  After running past the Aquarium and Pier 6 you make a quick run through Fells Point and end in the Canton.

This year I was really excited to run this race again.  So excited in fact I decided to try to recruit my brother to join me.  This would have been his first race longer than the Zoo Zoom in November, which is 5 miles.  Yes I said “would have been”.  Mike broke one of the cardinal rules of running.  Never eat anything the night before a race that you have never eaten before.  I headed to the race thinking I was going to be going it alone.

We got to the race with plenty of time to spare.  Dad and I sat on the tailgate of Element and watched the people stream by to get their packets and line up at the start.  The beginning of this race is announced by bag pipes, which I always found emotional even before we had a player at Pop’s funeral.

After about 2 1/2 miles I noticed a girl next to me was going about the same pace.  She struck up conversation and we ended up pacing each other for the rest of the race.  Her name was Meredith and I think she saved my time for the race overall.  She can be seen next to me in the pictures from the race.

In the end I ended up much slower than I was last year.  Here is a chart comparing my times:

Year Place Age/Sex Net Gun Pace
2006 555 105 1:10:26 1:10:57 10:08
2007 732 106 1:23:07 1:23:53 11:59

I can say that the difference between last year and this year has shown me how much I have been slacking on my training when it comes to my runs.  I really want to set a PR at the Disneyland 1/2 in September, and at the rate I am going that is not going to happen.  Ideally I will run it in 2:20, which is a lofty goal with my current race pace.  To help reach my goal I have really stepped up my shorter runs and starting tomorrow I am integrating speed training whenever I can.

It’s Official – I’m an Infomercial Star!

I thought, “Well they will probably at least use my before and afters.”  Can I tell you I almost fell off my chair when I see my face and they are interviewing me!  I couldn’t believe it.  All my friends looked so beautiful: Lori, Carla, Leigh, Becky, Tonda, Lisa, Meghan….I can’t even remember everyone because it was such a whirl just watching it.  I love you gals!

If you missed it this morning see the schedule below for other times to view it.  I am sure I will get it off my Tivo as soon as I can and be carrying it with me on DVD as well.  😉
